Central Otago is a region rich in heritage. Going back to a time when Maori sojourned to the gold-rushing Europeans and the pioneers stationers is one of the first steps towards appreciating all elements that have shaped the nature of this place and its people.

There are stories of the early European settlers who found a barren and empty landscape, softened only by the changing colours of the seasons. The stories of the early farmers who endured a hard, yet invigorating life as they broke the land, striving to establish the first early sheep stations.

There are stories of the early miners — the conquests and the tragedies of the rush for gold. In Central Otago, there is a sense of timelessness. Moving through its diverse communities one cannot but help be captivated by the rich history of this unique place.

The journey is not over, as a community we continue to shape the nature of how this community will unfold…
