Abstract

This essay considers the adverse effects of digital technology on the culture of written language, starting with the character set poverty of early digital computing, followed by the persistent neglect of typographical capability and the unforgiveable failure to enrich literate culture, in particular in Chinese, and finishing with a plea to provide separate World Wide Webs for each of the world's writing systems.
