Argues for 'anti-imperial' approach to reading Chaucer alert to critiques offered by Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak through postcolonial theory, in an essay titled 'The making of Americans, the teaching of English and the future of Cultural Studies,' published in New Literary History. Argument is firmly situated within Australia as postcolonial site.
