  30. survival and future reproduction. However, demonstrating such costs is confounded
  31. by positive correlations between life history traits. For example, individuals
  32. in good condition may be good at both surviving and reproducing. We studied such
  33. processes in a viviparous snow skink lizard (Niveoscincus microlepidotus) from high
  34. elevation sites in Tasmania, Australia. Our results show a stark difference in costs of
  35. reproduction between unmanipulated females from the natural population versus
  36. experimentally manipulated females (using follicle stimulating hormones). In the
  37. unmanipulated females, females with relatively larger reproductive investments survived
  38. better than females with smaller reproductive investments. In the experimental
  39. group, however, females forced to ‘over-invest’ into a larger clutch survived less well
  40. than controls. Thus, our study confirms the potential dangers of non-experimental

  266. survival and future reproduction. However, demonstrating such costs is confounded&#13;
  267. by positive correlations between life history traits. For example, individuals&#13;
  268. in good condition may be good at both surviving and reproducing. We studied such&#13;
  269. processes in a viviparous snow skink lizard (Niveoscincus microlepidotus) from high&#13;
  270. elevation sites in Tasmania, Australia. Our results show a stark difference in costs of&#13;
  271. reproduction between unmanipulated females from the natural population versus&#13;
  272. experimentally manipulated females (using follicle stimulating hormones). In the&#13;
  273. unmanipulated females, females with relatively larger reproductive investments survived&#13;
  274. better than females with smaller reproductive investments. In the experimental&#13;
  275. group, however, females forced to ‘over-invest’ into a larger clutch survived less well&#13;
  276. than controls. Thus, our study confirms the potential dangers of non-experimental&#13;
