37. <meta content="“Good genes” are genetic elements that contribute
38. to lifetime reproductive success, regardless of an individual’s
39. additional genotype. Their existence is debated,
40. and most work has targeted their viability benefits to the
41. offspring of choosy females. In the present study, we analyze
42. a case of potential good genes effects in adult male
43. sand lizards (Lacerta agilis). We show that males with a
44. particular RFLP (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism)
45. MHC genotype (O-males), as opposed to those
46. that lack this genetic element (NO-males), have less ectoparasites
47. under increasing physiological stress (indexed
48. by baseline corticosterone level), and are not constrained
49. by parasites at production of status coloration. Furthermore,
50. O-males are more successful at mate acquisition and
51. guard their partners longer. Ultimately, they have a higher
52. genetic reproductive success as assigned by microsatellites.

282. to lifetime reproductive success, regardless of an individual’s
283. additional genotype. Their existence is debated,
284. and most work has targeted their viability benefits to the
285. offspring of choosy females. In the present study, we analyze
286. a case of potential good genes effects in adult male
287. sand lizards (Lacerta agilis). We show that males with a
288. particular RFLP (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism)
289. MHC genotype (O-males), as opposed to those
290. that lack this genetic element (NO-males), have less ectoparasites
291. under increasing physiological stress (indexed
292. by baseline corticosterone level), and are not constrained
293. by parasites at production of status coloration. Furthermore,
294. O-males are more successful at mate acquisition and
295. guard their partners longer. Ultimately, they have a higher
296. genetic reproductive success as assigned by microsatellites.
