  28. consider whether communities represent a major transition in evolution - can
  29. particular community configurations evolve and maintain their integrity in the
  30. face of disruption arising from the self-interest of component individuals? This
  31. requires heritable variation among subcommunities in a landscape, and that
  32. alternative subcommunities maintain a degree of individuality in both time
  33. and space. Recently developed models show that spatial self-structuring in
  34. multispecies systems can meet both criteria and provide a rich substrate for

  313. consider whether communities represent a major transition in evolution - can&#13;
  314. particular community configurations evolve and maintain their integrity in the&#13;
  315. face of disruption arising from the self-interest of component individuals? This&#13;
  316. requires heritable variation among subcommunities in a landscape, and that&#13;
  317. alternative subcommunities maintain a degree of individuality in both time&#13;
  318. and space. Recently developed models show that spatial self-structuring in&#13;
  319. multispecies systems can meet both criteria and provide a rich substrate for&#13;
