Bryophytes, especially mosses produce distinctive fossils that often can be identified quite precisely. For unknown reasons, the Mesozoic and Palaeozoic records are dominated by hepatics, whereas the more recent (Cenozoic) records are dominated by mosses. Bryophytes, especially mosses produce distinctive fossils that often can be identified quite precisely. For unknown reasons, the Mesozoic and Palaeozoic records are dominated by hepatics, whereas the more recent (Cenozoic) records are dominated by mosses.
