<meta content="This chapter argues that medievalism in Australian culture needs to be understood through a postcolonial theory alert to a new historicist reading of cultural artefacts while nuanced by psychoanalysis. The focus of such a reading is the work of memory. 'Medievalism' is taken to mean the re-use of the medieval past and thus includes cultural, economic and academic practices. The artefacts read are dispersed across nineteenth-century records of property sale, a stone tower and a Gothic building, documents of twenthieth-century debate around the value of education and a range of memoirs. <meta content="1 I am grateful to Tony Stagg for research on this essay, to Julia Davis for expert legal advice, and to Mrs Maree
Mills of ‘Panshangar’ who gave me permission to visit the property and was generous in sharing her knowledge
with me. My thanks to Ken Ruthven who read an earlier draft; Stephanie Trigg, and the anonymous reader for this
volume who also read earlier drafts. My argument here had its beginning in a casual remark in an essay by John
Frow for which I am also grateful.

The focus of such a reading is the work of memory. 'Medievalism' is taken to mean the re-use of the medieval past and thus includes cultural, economic and academic practices. The artefacts read are dispersed across nineteenth-century records of property sale, a stone tower and a Gothic building, documents of twenthieth-century debate around the value of education and a range of memoirs. </p></div><table style="margin-bottom: 1em" cellpadding="3" class="not_ep_block" border="0"><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Item Type:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">Book Chapter</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Additional Information:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">This chapter was republished in the same volume by Melbourne University Publishing in 2006.</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Keywords:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">medievalism, memory, culture, Australia, national identity</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Subjects:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><a href="http://eprints.utas.edu.au/view/subjects/420306.html">420000 Language and Culture &gt; 420300 Cultural Studies &gt; 420306 Postcolonial and Global Cultural Studies</a></td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">ID Code:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">1952</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Deposited By:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><span class="ep_name_citation"><span class="person_name">Dr Jenna Mead</span></span></td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Deposited On:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">28 Sep 2007</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Last Modified:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">09 Jan 2008 02:30</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">ePrint Statistics:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><a target="ePrintStats" href="/es/index.php?action=show_detail_eprint;id=1952;">View statistics for this ePrint</a></td></tr></table><p align="right">Repository Staff Only: <a href="http://eprints.utas.edu.au/cgi/users/home?screen=EPrint::View&amp;eprintid=1952">item control page</a></p>
