399. fish, the purple wrasse (Notolabrus
400. fucicola), was examined
401. from two sites on the east coast of
402. Tasmania by using age- and lengthbased
403. models. Models based on the
404. von Bertalanffy growth function, in
405. the standard and a reparameterized
406. form, were constructed by using otolith-
407. derived age estimates. Growth
408. trajectories from tag-recaptures were
409. used to construct length-based growth
410. models derived from the GROTAG
411. model, in turn a reparameterization
412. of the Fabens model. Likelihood
413. ratio tests (LRTs) determined
414. the optimal parameterization of the
415. GROTAG model, including estimators
416. of individual growth variability,
417. seasonal growth, measurement error,
418. and outliers for each data set. Growth
419. models and parameter estimates were
420. compared by bootstrap conf idence
421. intervals, LRTs, and randomization
422. tests and plots of bootstrap parameter
423. estimates. The relative merit of
424. these methods for comparing models

426. LRTs combined with bootstrapping
427. and randomization tests provided
428. the most insight into the relationships
429. between parameter estimates.
430. Significant differences in growth of
431. purple wrasse were found between
432. sites in both length- and age-based
433. models. A significant difference in
434. the peak growth season was found
435. between sites, and a large difference
436. in growth rate between sexes
437. was found at one site with the use
