For both years, mangrove extent was mapped using an unsupervised classification of the digital orthomosaic and Digital ElevationModels (DEMs), or height maps, of the mangrove canopy were derived from stereo pairs. Helicopter and field observations in 1998 and 1999 respectively provided ground truth for interpreting the derived datasets. The comparison of mangrove extent revealed a substantial movement over the 41-year period, perhaps in response to hydrological changes that have resulted in a landward extension of saline conditions. Changes in the height of mangroves were observed but were difficult to quantify due to the reduced quality of the 1950 DEM. The study demonstrated the viability of using time-series of aerial photography for monitoring and understanding the long-term response of mangroves to environmental change, including hydrological variations and sea level rise." name="eprints.abstract" /> <meta content="2002" name="eprints.date" /> <meta content="published" name="eprints.date_type" /> <meta content="Wetlands Ecology and Management" name="eprints.publication" /> <meta content="10" name="eprints.volume" /> <meta content="2" name="eprints.number" /> <meta content="161-175" name="eprints.pagerange" /> <meta content="10.1023/A:1016547214434" name="eprints.id_number" /> <meta content="TRUE" name="eprints.refereed" /> <meta content="0923-4861" name="eprints.issn" /> <meta content="http://dx.doi.org/10.1023/A:1016547214434" name="eprints.official_url" /> <meta content="Avery, T.E. and Berlin, G.L. 1992. For both years, mangrove extent was mapped using an unsupervised classification of the digital orthomosaic and Digital ElevationModels (DEMs), or height maps, of the mangrove canopy were derived from stereo pairs. Helicopter and field observations in 1998 and 1999 respectively provided ground truth for interpreting the derived datasets. The comparison of mangrove extent revealed a substantial movement over the 41-year period, perhaps in response to hydrological changes that have resulted in a landward extension of saline conditions. Changes in the height of mangroves were observed but were difficult to quantify due to the reduced quality of the 1950 DEM. The study demonstrated the viability of using time-series of aerial photography for monitoring and understanding the long-term response of mangroves to environmental change, including hydrological variations and sea level rise.</p></div><table style="margin-bottom: 1em" cellpadding="3" class="not_ep_block" border="0"><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Item Type:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">Article</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Additional Information:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">The original publication is available at www.springerlink.com </td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Keywords:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">aerial photography, Australia, Digital Elevation Models, historical change, sea level rise, mangroves</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Subjects:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><a href="http://eprints.utas.edu.au/view/subjects/210000.html">210000 Science - General</a><br /><a href="http://eprints.utas.edu.au/view/subjects/300902.html">300000 Agricultural, Veterinary and Environmental Sciences > 300900 Land, Parks and Agriculture Management > 300902 Land and Parks Management</a></td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Collections:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">UNSPECIFIED</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">ID Code:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">3054</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Deposited By:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><span class="ep_name_citation"><span class="person_name">Dr Joanna Ellison</span></span></td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Deposited On:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">21 Jan 2008 09:57</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Last Modified:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">21 Jan 2008 09:57</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">ePrint Statistics:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><a target="ePrintStats" href="/es/index.php?action=show_detail_eprint;id=3054;">View statistics for this ePrint</a></td></tr></table><p align="right">Repository Staff Only: <a href="http://eprints.utas.edu.au/cgi/users/home?screen=EPrint::View&eprintid=3054">item control page</a></p> </td></tr></table> </div> <!-- InstanceEndEditable --></td> </tr> <tr> <td><!-- #BeginLibraryItem "/Library/footer_eprints.lbi" --> <table width="795" border="0" align="left" cellpadding="0" class="footer"> <tr valign="top"> <td colspan="2"><div align="center"><a href="http://www.utas.edu.au">UTAS home</a> | <a href="http://www.utas.edu.au/library/">Library home</a> | <a href="/">ePrints home</a> | <a href="/contact.html">contact</a> | <a href="/information.html">about</a> | <a href="/view/">browse</a> | <a href="/perl/search/simple">search</a> | <a href="/perl/register">register</a> | <a href="/perl/users/home">user area</a> | <a href="/help/">help</a></div><br /></td> </tr> <tr><td colspan="2"><p><img src="/images/eprints/footerline.gif" width="100%" height="4" /></p></td></tr> <tr valign="top"> <td width="68%" class="footer">Authorised by the University Librarian<br /> © University of Tasmania ABN 30 764 374 782<br /> <a href="http://www.utas.edu.au/cricos/">CRICOS Provider Code 00586B</a> | <a href="http://www.utas.edu.au/copyright/copyright_disclaimers.html">Copyright & Disclaimers</a> | <a href="http://www.utas.edu.au/accessibility/index.html">Accessibility</a> | <a href="http://eprints.utas.edu.au/feedback/">Site Feedback</a> </td> <td width="32%"><div align="right"> <p align="right" class="NoPrint"><a href="http://www.utas.edu.au/"><img src="http://www.utas.edu.au/shared/logos/unioftasstrip.gif" alt="University of Tasmania Home Page" width="260" height="16" border="0" align="right" /></a></p> <p align="right" class="NoPrint"><a href="http://www.utas.edu.au/"><br /> </a></p> </div></td> </tr> <tr valign="top"> <td><p> </p></td> <td><div align="right"><span class="NoPrint"><a href="http://www.eprints.org/software/"><img src="/images/eprintslogo.gif" alt="ePrints logo" width="77" height="29" border="0" align="bottom" /></a></span></div></td> </tr> </table> <!-- #EndLibraryItem --> <div align="center"></div></td> </tr> </table> </body> </html>
