  25. <meta content="Consumption choices and behaviour of households influence well-being and demand for food
  26. products. For healthy eating and well-being households make choices such that the
  27. recommended daily calories are met. Such household choices are generally informed by a
  28. Food Guide (FG). Evidence suggests that households’ daily calorie intake may differ
  29. significantly from that suggested by their FG. In this paper, the extent to which Vietnamese
  30. households’ consumption choices follow the US FGP guidelines is examined Factors that
  31. determine the number of FGP food items and food groups, chosen by households in Vietnam,
  32. are identified. Data from the Vietnamese Living Standards Survey (VLSS), for the periods
  33. 1992/93, 1997/98, 2002 and 2004 are used. In addition, household consumption choices are
  34. analysed using a binary logit frameworks. Six food groups, namely: breads, cereals, rice and
  35. pasta (F1), fruits (F2), vegetables (F3), meats, poultry, dry beans, eggs and nuts (F4); milk
  36. and milk products (F5); and, fats, oils), drinks, sweets and cakes (F6), are considered.
  37. Preliminary results suggest that the demographic and regional characteristics determine the
  38. number of FGP food groups chosen, and the number of food items consumed by Vietnamese
  39. households over the period 1992-2004. The observed changes in food group choices over the
  40. four survey periods have implications for calorie intake and expenditure poverty,
  41. malnourishment, income and wealth generation in Vietnam." name="eprints.abstract" />

  249. products. For healthy eating and well-being households make choices such that the&#13;
  250. recommended daily calories are met. Such household choices are generally informed by a&#13;
  251. Food Guide (FG). Evidence suggests that households’ daily calorie intake may differ&#13;
  252. significantly from that suggested by their FG. In this paper, the extent to which Vietnamese&#13;
  253. households’ consumption choices follow the US FGP guidelines is examined Factors that&#13;
  254. determine the number of FGP food items and food groups, chosen by households in Vietnam,&#13;
  255. are identified. Data from the Vietnamese Living Standards Survey (VLSS), for the periods&#13;
  256. 1992/93, 1997/98, 2002 and 2004 are used. In addition, household consumption choices are&#13;
  257. analysed using a binary logit frameworks. Six food groups, namely: breads, cereals, rice and&#13;
  258. pasta (F1), fruits (F2), vegetables (F3), meats, poultry, dry beans, eggs and nuts (F4); milk&#13;
  259. and milk products (F5); and, fats, oils), drinks, sweets and cakes (F6), are considered.&#13;
  260. Preliminary results suggest that the demographic and regional characteristics determine the&#13;
  261. number of FGP food groups chosen, and the number of food items consumed by Vietnamese&#13;
  262. households over the period 1992-2004. The observed changes in food group choices over the&#13;
  263. four survey periods have implications for calorie intake and expenditure poverty,&#13;
  264. malnourishment, income and wealth generation in Vietnam.</p></div><table style="margin-bottom: 1em" cellpadding="3" class="not_ep_block" border="0"><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Item Type:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">Report (Discussion Paper)</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Keywords:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">REPEC, Food Guide Pyramid, Consumption Choice, Food Group Choice, Binary Logit Analysis </td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Subjects:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><a href="http://eprints.utas.edu.au/view/subjects/340200.html">340000 Economics &gt; 340200 Applied Economics</a></td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">ID Code:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">2510</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Deposited By:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><span class="ep_name_citation"><span class="person_name">Ms Tracy Kostiuk</span></span></td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Deposited On:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">22 Nov 2007 12:38</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Last Modified:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">09 Jan 2008 02:30</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">ePrint Statistics:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><a target="ePrintStats" href="/es/index.php?action=show_detail_eprint;id=2510;">View statistics for this ePrint</a></td></tr></table><p align="right">Repository Staff Only: <a href="http://eprints.utas.edu.au/cgi/users/home?screen=EPrint::View&amp;eprintid=2510">item control page</a></p>
